Shoplifter Returns To Macy’s After Thwarted Theft, Stabs 2 Loss Prevention Officers
PHILADELPHIA, PA - A loss prevention officer was killed and another was injured after being stabbed by a man who attempted to shoplift hats from the Center City Macy’s on Monday morning.
Philadelphia Police say that the man, who has not yet been identified, entered the store and attempted to steal hats at around 10:45 AM from the busy Center City Macy’s at 13th Street and Market Street.
The suspect was stopped by the loss prevention officers and the merchandise was recovered. The man was let go by the Macy’s employees, only to have him return about 15 minutes later and begin attacking them with a knife.
While the identities of the loss prevention employees were not released, police confirmed that a 30-year-old employee was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital as a result of the knife attack. A 23-year-old employee is in stable condition at a nearby hospital after being stabbed in the face and left arm.
The suspect was captured at the Somerset SEPTA Station and has been positively identified by witnesses of the attack. A knife, most likely the same one used in the outrageous stabbings, was recovered on SEPTA property, according to police.
The Center City Macy’s, located at 1300 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19107, has been the site of intense retail theft with over 250 theft reports to Philadelphia Police in 2023 alone.
